Firefighters respond to all types of poisonings from carbon monoxide poisoning, accidental and intentional overdoses, children accessing medicines and household chemicals and youth who abuse inhalants. Many substances involved in inhalant abuse are also major fire hazards. Nearly 40% of those who die from inhalant abuse were first time users. It is important to talk to middle school aged children about inhalants. For more information, visit www.mass.gov/dph/inhalant (state) or www.inhalants.org (national).
If you think someone has been poisoned, call the Regional Center for Poison Control and Prevention serving Massachusetts and Rhode Island at 1-800-222-1222 (TTY: 1-888-244-5313).
